Triceratops Facts
Triceratops herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur which lived during the late Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous Period (about 68 to 65 million years ago in North America.
It was one of the last dinosaur to appear before the great Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event.
Bearing a large bony frill and three horns on its large four-legged body, and conjuring similarities with the modern rhinoceros, Triceratops is one of the most recognizable of all dinosaurs. Although it shared the landscape with and was preyed upon by the fearsome T-Rex, it is unclear whether the two battled the way they are commonly depicted in movies, kid's dinosaur books and many cartoons.
A Triceratop's skull suggests the impressive horns of the beast were for more than just attracting a mate.
The three-horned Triceratops dinosaur weighed up to 10 tons and had one of the largest skulls of any land animal in the world.
The Triceratops horns and frill of the skull seem to have another function other than sexual display or competition with rivals, they were just as important for species recognition and visual communication in these animals.
